Day 4 - Who said that we can't eat ice cream for dinner?

Today was another day back at school and at my other job that I have not mentioned yet. I work as a day camp leader at a local community center. I've had this job for over 3 years and I absolutely LOVE IT! I have the joy of working with children ages 5-12 planning and playing games with them after school. It is such a great way to stay in touch with my inner child. For example, over the summer I rolled down a grassy hill and I felt the most alive I ever have. Working with these kids, I get the chance to be goofy, dance, sing, and just live! Kids don't care if they have snot dripping down their face, mud on their shoes, or dirt underneath their finger nails. Why? Because they live in the moment and don't care what other people are thinking about them or what's going to happen next.

I think today God showed his face in the innocence of the children that I work with. And as a role model for these kids, I really enjoy seeing them doing things that are really positive and generous. As we were cleaning up the room ready to move on to the next activity, I was helping the children put the chairs away when one of the boys generously asked if he could put my chair away for me. For a kid this is huge! I remember when I was a kid all I could think about was myself and on top of that I hated it when my parents told me to clean up my room. This 5 year old boy through his generosity showed me that God comes in all shapes and sizes and in any generous act no matter how small. This small act of kindness was a little reminder that there is a little bit of goodness within us all, and even as children we possessed that goodness. I have definitely learned so much from working with the children at my job. And I believe that God is living in these children, teaching me how He intended for us to live.

I think we all carry around an inner child that we keep closed behind the walls we build up inside of us. Who said that we can't eat ice cream for dinner? I think it's time I start living by my inner child!

What do you think? Do you think we all have an inner child that is just craving to live?

  1. Did you eat ice cream for dinner??? I had a cookie for breakfast on Monday :-) Sometimes being an adult means you get to do all the things your parents told you that you can't when you were young. (Though I do think Mom often let us eat sweets for breakfast!)

  2. No, I didn't eat ice cream for dinner, but after I wrote that I started craving ice cream like crazy! And I definitely had a cupcake for breakfast the other day too. I think you're right about Mom letting us eat sweets for breakfast, so why are we so skinny? :)
